Signs of overdose include unresponsiveness or extreme difficulty waking, very slow, shallow, or stopped breathing, gurgling or choking sounds, blue or grayish lips and fingertips, pinpoint (very small) pupils, and limp body.
If you suspect an overdose: call 911 immediately; try to wake the person by calling their name and rubbing knuckles on their sternum; administer naloxone (Narcan) if available — it reverses opioid effects and is available without a prescription at pharmacies in most US states; place the person in the recovery position (on their side) if breathing; stay with them until help arrives. Naloxone wears off in 30 to 90 minutes, so even if the person appears to recover, emergency care is essential.
