If you have heart disease, high blood pressure, or another cardiovascular condition, you may wonder whether ED medication is safe. The answer: most men with stable heart conditions can safely use PDE5 inhibitors — but not all. Here is what the evidence says.
The Link Between ED and Heart Disease
ED and cardiovascular disease share the same root cause: poor blood vessel health. Because penile arteries are smaller than coronary arteries, vascular disease often causes ED before chest pain or heart attack. Research in the Journal of the American Heart Association found men with ED had a 59% higher cardiovascular event risk over 6 years. Learn more in our article on what causes ED at different ages.
Is ED Medication Safe with Heart Disease?
The American Heart Association states PDE5 inhibitors are safe for most men with stable cardiovascular disease — those whose condition is well-controlled and who are not taking nitrates. Men who can exercise to moderate intensity (climb two flights of stairs without chest pain) are generally considered low-risk.
High Blood Pressure and ED Medications
PDE5 inhibitors mildly lower blood pressure (8-10 mmHg systolic). For well-controlled hypertension this is usually fine. However, combined with alpha-blockers (doxazosin) the effect can be significant — let your doctor know all medications you take.
Safer Options for Heart Patients
Cialis (tadalafil) has the most extensive cardiovascular safety data and is often preferred for men with stable heart disease. Our full comparison — Cialis vs Viagra — covers the clinical differences in detail.
